Despite the heavy glass display protecting the mirror it projected an incredible energy that seem to retune and realign my body and mind. I was mesmerized. Little did I know at that time that the Aztec Nahuales, the wisdom keepers, had plans for Valerie and I, for 3 months later we met Sergio Magna Ocelocoyotl in Hawaii, the Toltec teacher who happens to be a highly trained torch bearer for the particular Tol lineage, which still has the knowledge about how to use the Obsidian Mirror. He is now bringing-forth this Toltec/Mexica oral tradition that has never had been taught to Westerners before.
The Obsidian Mirror is a tool for the extrasensory perception of the subtle worlds, such as exploration of our previous lives or ancestral history that current affects our lives. The mirror serves as a divination tool so we can see the past and the future—it allows us to see hidden aspects of ourselves so that we may better understand who we are as full human beings. One of the most important capacities of the Obsidian Mirror is that it connects us to and helps us to cleanse our ‘underworlds’, our shadow-selves, our unconscious aspects which limit our growth and prosperity—the reason for undesirable emotional patterns.
By using the mirror, which gives us a reflection of our true selves-- we see more clearly and just through this “seeing” a new understanding becomes available which can help to free us from old patters and create positive behavioral shifts in our lives, powered by wisdom and knowledge. Both the Toltec and Mayan people have used the Obsidian Mirror for centuries. The sacred posture needed to work with the mirror, is depicted in artifacts such as Tezcatzoncatl, (Chaac Mol figures that appear in Tula with Obsidian mirrors in their belly.)
I have also discovered that an Obsidian Mirror was used by John Dee (1527-1608), a famous astrologer, mathematician, magician and advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. The mirror had been brought to Europe by Cortez, after his conquest of Mexico between 1527 and 1530. John Dee and his associate Edward Kelly used the mirror to ‘see’ the Angel’s oracle text, messages from angels that were pertinent to political and social events of the Elizabethan Court and highly valued by this society.
Here is an interview I did with my friend Valerie Niestrath, who has been working with the mirror for nearly four years. As you will see she confirms that the mirror has had a dramatic impact on her life, she believes that through this work she has essentially cured her cancer. “Working with the mirror exceeded by expectations. I have learned to be comfortable with the many shadow aspects of myself and over time to transform them. I have found mirror work to be some of the most profound & life changing family history and health issues, assisting me to turn around old patterns of thinking and behavior that I have not been able to address by other means.
I find that I look forward to looking into the mirror.” Valerie has been working with the mirror for over 3.5 years and is still using the mirror, taking periodical breaks but every time that she feels a need, like an issue that had not been addressed by psychological means, she says: “I reach for the mirror to work out tricky problems that cannot be accessed by other means”.
I asked Valerie, about the accessibility of this work: “The mirror is definitely accessible, IF, AND ONLY IF, you have worked with someone who can teach the proper protocol. Knowing how to hold and create sacred space is important and being in the energy field of Sergio makes this possible. Since people can be startled by what they see, it is important to practice creating sacred space and the breathing techniques necessary to access the altered state. Regular practice can be the determining factor of whether it is successful or not.
The beauty of the mirror practice is that it bypasses the conscious brain, so it never lies....it shows you always what is hidden, whether you like it or not.”
NOTES, WORKSHOPS AND CONTACTS: About Sergio Magana Ocelocoyotl’s healing & energy protocols: Sergio teaches techniques that join the most ancient Toltec and Mexica (Aztec) wisdom with the use of energy. He has used this evolving healing modality for 11 years on over 15,000 patients, with results that challenge the paradigms of medical science. Many of these teachings were first introduced to the public by Carlos Castaneda in his book "The Teachings of Don Juan".
